Waymo’s driverless cars have driven themselves 5 million miles on public roads, or roughly 21 times the average distance between the Earth and the Moon.
Waymo’s Chief Executive John Krafcik wrote a blog post at online publishing site Medium to highlight the milestone, saying that the exciting part is how Waymo, a unit of Alphabet Inc. GOOG, -0.15% is picking up speed: It took six years to reach its first millionth mile, and the fifth million under three months.
Earlier this week, California approved new rules to allow for test driverless cars to take to the roads without a human inside. Analysts at Evercore ISI said in a note this week that Waymo and Cruise, the driverless-car unit of General Motors Co.GM, -0.81% will likely be the first companies to start such tests in the state.
Ford Motor Co. F, +1.28% on Tuesday said it had selected Miami to launch its driverless-car fleet.
